The Social Media and Marketing Specialist will join a creative and collaborative team in promoting the museum, driving attendance and championing the importance of playful learning in children’s healthy development. This position plays a key role in supporting the External Relations department through social media, marketing, communications and other work.

This position does not oversee full-time permanent direct reports, but may on occasion manage the work of interns, contract positions and/or volunteers.

Social Media

  • Implement organic social media strategies across social channels (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok) 
  • Create compelling social media content, including video, photos and written posts, that elevates the museum’s voice and generates engagement among followers 
  • Support the day-to-day management of social media channels – creating content, posting, monitoring and responding to comments and questions, analyzing and reporting campaign results 
  • Execute paid social media campaigns, monitoring results in real time and adjusting budgets and strategies as directed 
  • Stay current on social media trends and best practices, bringing new ideas and recommendations on how to further enhance the museum’s social presence

Marketing/Advertising

  • Support the creation and implementation of marketing and advertising campaigns 
  • Coordinate the creation and distribution of onsite and offsite marketing collateral including writing/editing copy, requesting assets, routing materials for approval and ensuring all collateral adheres to museum brand guidelines 
  • Support promotion of museum events, special programs and marketing activations at the museum and offsite 
  • Develop and maintain cross-promotional partnerships with outside organizations to advance initiatives 
  • Assist with audience development and consumer behavior research by analyzing a variety of resources 
  • Support the development and execution of influencer marketing programs 
  • Track performance and effectiveness of marketing and advertising initiatives, providing insight into future focus areas for marketing efforts

Communications

  • Curate and manage content calendars for social media, email and blog channels 
  • Ideate and write engaging blog content that champions the power of playful learning 
  • Create email newsletters and other alerts within the museum’s email communications platform 
  • Support media relations efforts as needed 
  • Manage calendar listings of museum events on mcm.org and outside platforms

Administrative Support

  • Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications to track expenses, attendance and other data 
  • Help ensure expenses are tracked accurately and invoices are processed in a timely fashion

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (please highlight the following in resume or cover letter):

  • Minimum 5 years of combined experience in formal education, training or work in the fields of communications, marketing, advertising and/or social media is required. 
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing social media channels and strategies for a brand or organization. 
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging, brand-appropriate videos, images, posts and stories for various social media channels. 
  • Demonstrated experience in content creation and distribution across a variety of owned channels.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Experience implementing marketing and communications initiatives to drive measurable results for an organization. 
  • Familiarity with creating and sending email newsletters or marketing appeals via commercial email platforms. 
  • Excellent project management, time management, collaboration and communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be results oriented, highly organized and able to meet deadlines. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be creative, with a strong sense of initiative and ability to work well with a fast-moving team.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required.
