The Wisconsin Department of Tourism has a paid Public Relations Internship starting summer/fall 2015. This position offers professional experience that will build on your public and media relations skills in a broad work environment that includes the travel and hospitality industry, state government and private marketing agencies.

Department of Tourism interns get hands-on experience with opportunities to accompany our communications staff on press conferences, media events and travel writer familiarization tours. Our former interns have landed communication and marketing positions with M&I Bank, Albuquerque Convention & Visitor Bureau, Stephan & Brady Marketing Agency, Duluth Trading Company, and the Wisconsin State Legislature, just to name a few.

Duties include:

  • Writing Department of Tourism news releases, industry newsletters, TravelWisconsin.com web features and other general writing assignments as assigned.
  • Assist public relations staff in booking and coordinating media interviews for the Tourism Secretary.
  • Manage the media outreach for the Department’s Joint Effort Marketing grant program.
  • Responding to journalist requests for Wisconsin travel information and photography.
  • Review and edit the work of an outside public relations agency and freelance writers employed by the state.
  • Assist with general media monitoring.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Skills required:

  • Junior or senior year college student enrolled in a Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or Marketing program at an accredited college or university.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and meet established deadlines.
  • Analytical skills necessary to effectively work through public relations challenges and strategies.

As this is a paid internship, the schedule is flexible but we would like a commitment of at least 12 - 15 hours per week.  The rate of pay for this position is $10.00 per hour.
