Do you love downtown Milwaukee and are interested in public relations, marketing and event planning? The Westown Association is seeking two Marketing & Events Interns for summer/fall 2021 (June-December). As well as additional marketing and public relations tasks, interns will focus on the organization and execution of the Milwaukee Night Market, the Westown Golf Open, the 54th Shamrock Club of Wisconsin St. Patrick’s Day Parade and other events.

This internship is for students with an interest in event planning, and are majoring in public relations, marketing or any communications related field. We will also work to help the student meet school credit requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Event coordination of the Milwaukee Night Market produced in collaboration with Westown & NEWaukee

Duties include:

  • Preparing email newsletters
  • Scheduling social media posts for Westown & Night Market social media channels
  • Preparing press releases & media kits
  • Updating content on westown.org
  • Assisting with brochure & poster distribution
  • Intern is required to be available on Wednesday, August 18 from 10AM-10PM for on-site assistance during the Night Market which includes set-up & take-down, customer assistance, collecting photos from the event & frequent social media updates. 

Event coordination of the 8th Annual Westown Golf Open

Duties include:

  • Preparing email newsletters
  • Scheduling social media posts for Westown social media channels
  • Updating content on westown.org
  • Raffle prize & silent auction item solicitation
  • Organizing raffle & silent auction packages
  • Organizing golfer gift bags
  • Preparing outing booklets
  • If schedule allows, intern is encouraged to attend the Westown Golf Outing on September 13 from 6AM-6PM for on-site assitance which includes set-up & take-down, golfer registration, raffle ticket sales, collecting photos from the event & frequent social media updates.

Event coordination of the 54th Shamrock Club of Wisconsin St. Patrick's Day Parade (rescheduled due to public health restrictions)

Duties include:

  • Preparing email newsletters
  • Scheduling social media posts for Westown & St. Patrick's Day Parade social media channels
  • Preparing press releases & media kits
  • Updating content on westown.org & saintpatricksparade.org
  • Assisting with brochure & poster distribution
  • Coordination & preparation of parade press conference, ShamROCK Kick-off Party & VIP Parade viewing area
  • Intern is required to be available on September 24 from 8AM-10PM for on-site assistance during the Parade Press Conference & ShamROCK Kick-off Party which includes set-up & take-down, media opportunities, raffle ticket sales, collecting photos from the event & frequent social media updates.
  • Intern is required to be available on September 25 from 5AM-3PM for on-site assistance during the Parade which includes set-up of VIP viewing area, media opportunities, collecting photos from the event & frequent social media updates.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Intern will assist Marketing & Events Coordinator with general marketing and office management tasks such as:

  • Preparing monthly email newsletters & event email blasts
  • Preparing social media posts for Westown social media channels
  • Maintaining westown.org content & images
  • Maintaining databases, mailing lists & vital records
  • Assisting with graphic design work if able
  • Creating & updating Westown Intern Manual
  • Assisting with preparation of other events including the River Rhythms concert series, the Westown Annual Meeting and Westown Gets Lit Holiday Event, as well as membership mixers and stakeholder meetings
  • Helping with general office functions including answering phones, greeting guests, office maintenance, mass mailings, meeting preparation and other projects as assigned by the Marketing & Events Coordinator
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior college standing & enrolled in a college pursuing a degree in public relations, marketing or other communications related fields
  • Strong written & oral communication skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented & capable of managing multiple tasks
  • Self-starter who is energetic, outgoing & learns quickly
  • Ability to work with a variety of professionals to keep projects on track
  • Ability to work under deadlines with creativity & a sense of humor
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with various social media platforms
  • Those with knowledge in graphic design, photography & Word Press are encouraged to apply
  • Familiarity with Downtown Milwaukee is helpful
  • Prior office experience is preferred
  • Candidate should expect to work at event sites that will require moderate physical activity

Candidate must be able to meet the following time requirements:

  • Be able to start internship in early June 2021
  • Work within a consistent schedule during normal office hours, preferably 2-3 days per week
  • Flexible scheduling, 12 hours per week minimum
  • Additional hours may be required during event weeks:
  1. Required to be available - Night Market: Wednesday, August 18 from 10AM-10PM; River Rhythms: date/time TBD; Parade Press Conference & ShamROCK Kick-off Party: Friday, September 24 from 8AM-10PM; St. Patrick's Day Parade: Saturday, September 25 from 5AM-3PM
  2. Encouraged to be available - Westown Golf Open: Monday, Septemeber 13 from 6AM-6PM; Westown Annual Meeting: Tuesday, November 9 from 3-7PM; Westown Gets Lit: Thursday, December 2 from 2-7PM

Although this internship is unpaid, it can be structured for school credit. Intern can expect to build their portfolio and experience while having access to a network of downtown professionals. Additionally, there is opportunity for internship to grow into a paid, full-time Marketing & Administrative Assistant position beginning in January 2022. Parking is provided.
