As the External Communications Senior Strategist, you will play a vital role in shaping and delivering 3M’s communications strategy. This individual will collaborate closely with 3M’s Public Affairs and 3M business teams to develop and deliver communications that align with our organizational goals.

The impact you will make in this role

As an External Communications Senior Strategist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. In this role, you will:

  • Support global campaigns, activations and communications that advance 3M’s reputation and fuel growth opportunities by leveraging paid, earned, shared and owned channels. 
  • Develop and execute compelling content and thought leadership strategies for cross-functional teams, including Communications, Government Affairs, Sponsorships and relevant business group partners. 
  • Build relationships with key media contacts and conduct outreach around enterprise news, initiatives and activations. 
  • Produce owned content, including press releases, messaging documents, News Center stories, etc., to advance company priorities and enable global teams. 
  • Manage content publication to 3M-owned channels, paid platforms, and internal content management systems to advance the brand and enable global teams. 
  • Assist in monitoring, reporting and insight generation for 3M, its priority campaigns and key activations. 
  • Serve as a trusted resource and consultant for internal teams, partners and vendors on Communications priorities and tactics, including earned media strategies, owned content opportunities, paid media extensions, and KPIs for measurement/reporting.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Communications, Public Relations, or Journalism (completed and verified prior to start) 
  • Seven (7) years of experience in communications, media, brand, and/or marketing, including experience at a global multi-national company or agency in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Proven ability to convey critical information through compelling and relevant communications, contributing to brand reputation/business growth. 
  • Track record of successful media relationships and impactful story placements. 
  • Strong collaboration skills with ability to build and maintain strong relationships at multiple levels inside and outside the organization. 
  • Demonstrated skill with project coordination, relationship management and tactical execution in a cross-functional environment. 
  • Professional, confident, and positive demeanor, with ability to maintain poise under pressure. 
  • Excellent writing and verbal communications skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills, and project management skills. 
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex information into easily understandable language and align communications with business objectives. 
  • Advance degree in public relations, communications, or journalism
