As an organization, we work hard to promote, program and enhance our neighborhood through special events, business outreach and economic development initiatives that help build a thriving downtown community. The staff works with a board of directors, committee members, city officials and volunteers to coordinate events, programs and the administration of Business Improvement District #5.

Do you love downtown Milwaukee and are interested in event planning and marketing? Westown Association is seeking an Event Production Intern for summer/fall 2023 (May-September).

Westown Association is seeking an Event Production Intern for summer/fall 2023. The primary focus of the internship will be on coordinating the Milwaukee Night Market, Westown Day Market and the Westown Golf Open, as well as additional office and marketing tasks.

This internship is for students with an interest in event planning and marketing, and are majoring in public relations, marketing or any communications related field. We’ll also work to help the student meet school credit requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Event coordination of the Milwaukee Night Market

Intern will assist staff with organization, planning and execution of the Milwaukee Night Market which takes place on West Wisconsin Avenue on Wednesdays June 14, July 19, August 16 and September 13. Duties include:

  • Preparing vendor materials
  • Organizing & maintaining inventory of event supplies
  • Assisting with vendor load-in & greeting entertainment
  • Assisting with bar operations including moving inventory, cash drops and other help where needed
  • Assisting with distribution of marketing materials
  • Intern is required to be available on June 14, July 19, August 16 and September 13 from 10AM-11PM for on-site assistance which includes event set-up & take-down, beverage sales & inventory & customer assistance.
  • Event set-up & take-down requires tasks including moving tables, tents, cases of beer and liquor, fencing and other heavy and large items. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs. and be on feet for long periods of time.
Event coordination of the Westown Day Market
 
Intern will assist staff with organization, planning and execution of the Westown Day Market which takes place at Zeidler Union Square on Thursdays, June 8 & 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24, September 7 & 21. Duites include:
  • Preparing vendor materials
  • Organizing & maintaining inventory of supplues
  • Assisting with vendor load-in & greeting entertainment
  • Assisting with distribution of marketing materials
  • Intern may be asked to staff Day Market on June 8 & 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24, September 7 & 21 from 9AM-3PM for on-site assitance which includes event set-up, take-down & customer assistance.

Event coordination of the 10th Annual Westown Golf Open

Intern will assist staff with organization, planning and execution the Westown Golf Open which takes place at Western Lakes Golf Club on Monday, September 25. Duties include:

  • Preparing & maintaining registration database
  • Organizing & maintaining inventory of event supplies
  • Raffle prize & silent auction item solicitation
  • Organizing raffle & silent auction packages
  • Organizing golfer gift bags
  • Updating golf outing content on westown.org
  • If schedule allows, intern is encouraged to attend the Westown Golf Outing on September 25 from 6AM–6PM for on-site assistance which includes set-up & take-down, golfer registration & raffle ticket sales.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES:

Intern will assist Marketing & Events Director with general marketing and office management tasks such as:

  • Preparing monthly email newsletters & event email blasts
  • Preparing social media posts for Westown social media channels 
  • Maintaining westown.org content & images
  • Maintaining databases, mailing lists & vital records
  • Assisting with graphic design work
  • Creating & updating Westown Intern Manual
  • Assisting with preparation of other potential events including membership mixers and stakeholder meetings
  • Helping with general office functions including mass mailings, meeting preparation, office maintenance and other projects as assigned by the Marketing & Events Director

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior college standing & enrolled in a college pursuing a degree in public relations, marketing or other communications related fields
  • Strong written & oral communication skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented & capable of managing multiple tasks
  • Self-starter who is energetic, outgoing & learns quickly
  • Ability to work with a variety of professionals to keep projects on track
  • Ability to work under deadlines with creativity & a sense of humor
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with various social media platforms
  • Those with knowledge in graphic design, photography & Word Press are encouraged to apply
  • Familiarity with downtown Milwaukee is helpful
  • Prior office experience is preferred
  • Candidate should expect to work at event sites that will require exceptional physical activity

Candidate must be able to meet the following time requirements:

  • Start date flexible, but ideally would begin mid-May 2023
  • Work within a consistent schedule during normal office hours, preferably 2-3 days per week
  • Flexible scheduling, 12-15 hours per week with opportunity for additional hours as available
  • Additional hours may be required during event weeks
  1. Required to be available – Milwaukee Night Market: Wednesdays, June 14, July 19, August 16 and September 13 from 10AM-11PM
  2. May be asked to staff - Westown Day Market: June 8 & 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24, September 7 & 21 from 9AM-3PM.
  3. If schedule allows – Westown Golf Open: Monday, September 25 from 6AM-6PM

Intern will be paid an hourly rate of $10 per hour during a mutually agreed upon schedule of 12-15 hours per week, but may vary based on event schedules. Additional hours must be approved by the Marketing & Events Director.

This internship can also be structured for school credit. Intern can expect to build their portfolio while having access to a network of downtown professionals. Parking is provided.
