Your Role:

The News Editor will be a team leader for MPR News, ensuring accurate, unbiased, thorough, and impactful news reporting is delivered on all platforms. We are looking for a supportive editor who will help reporters do their best work, with attention to source and story development, guiding research and production with a sharp eye on audio and digital skills for memorable reporting that informs, includes, and inspires. The Editor develops detailed daily and enterprise plans and works in a hands-on capacity to realize those plans within and across teams. The Editor will understand service to audience and will work to ensure we are meeting and exceeding journalism needs statewide.

The News Editor may be assigned to support other teams/areas of news coverage as deemed necessary, which may include nights and weekends.

This position sits in the collective bargaining agreement between MPR and Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (“SAG-AFTRA”).

Expected Hourly Range: $37.98- 45.57 / hourly. The exact hourly rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Your Responsibility:

  • Maintains the highest level of journalism ethics and standards. 
  • Serves as strong editorial and content editor, audio/digital, cultivating superior performance in a digital first newsroom environment across all platforms. 
  • Guides reporter from assignment through production, with a keen eye on delivering well-crafted, creative, and impactful reporting that engages audiences. 
  • Works collaboratively with teams across MPR News, often on multiple projects at a time, as an Editor and Mentor. 
  • Works with MPR News leadership on news coverage and strategy. 
  • Other duties within MPR News as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required 
  • 5 yrs. of editing or equivalent experience. 
  • 5 or more years of experience in journalism, including experience creating, managing content and workflows

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Proven editorial judgment with a commitment to fair, unbiased, courageous, and innovative journalism, with an understanding of AP style, media production, and editing. 
  • Exceptional broadcast and digital writing and production skills 
  • Knowledge of developing and maintaining a source network. 
  • Able to work well and productively in a team environment where news is constantly changing and have the temperament to enjoy the process. 
  • Ability to prioritize work and make resource decisions in a fast-paced media environment. 
  • Excellent coaching, communication, and teamwork skills. 
  • Commitment to an inclusive and equitable workplace. 
  • Commitment to public service journalism.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience advancing organizational equity and inclusion efforts. 
  • Experience with data journalism reporting.
