Position Overview:

The Editor and Writer, reporting to the Director of Content & Editorial, will support the marketing and communications efforts for the Chicago Botanic Garden. We are seeking a skilled storyteller with proven experience in crafting narratives that resonate with diverse audiences.

The ideal Editor and Writer will have a strong background in creating compelling calls to action for marketing pieces that range from emails to print collateral, and experience with researching, writing, and interviewing sources to uncover and write unique stories that highlight the Garden’s work.

Candidates must provide examples of published work showcasing their writing expertise.

Responsibilities:

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Find and tell the stories of the Chicago Botanic Garden through long-form articles, blogs, and other storytelling formats. 
  • Help develop and execute print and digital campaigns that involve emails, digital advertising, headlines, landing pages, newsletters, and scripts, and other communication methods with the Garden’s many audiences. 
  • Collaborate with teams to identify content opportunities that reflect the Garden’s impact and align with its goals and brand messaging. 
  • Research industry-related topics to create Garden content that is relevant, engaging, and up to date. 
  • Work with design teams to pair visuals with written content effectively. 
  • Manage multiple assignments simultaneously, attend related meetings, and work efficiently and effectively within deadlines. 
  • Work with Director, Content & Editorial, to ensure copy tone and style are consistent.
  • Edit and proofread written copy from Garden departments.

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • At least three years of professional writing and editing experience, with Chicago Manual of Style preferred. 
  • A bachelor’s degree is required. Ideal fields of study are marketing, communications, journalism or related field or experience. 
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to interface with coworkers at all levels.
