The Director of Communications leverages communications expertise, business acumen and interpersonal skills to design and deliver communication plans, strategies and messaging to help engage employees and connect their work to the overall Optum Health mission and values. This position will develop and implement comprehensive internal communications plans that support business objectives. A key component of this position will be ensuring message alignment to enterprise priorities and help minimize public scrutiny during critical issues. This position is part of the Optum corporate communications team supporting Whole Health Solutions and reports to the vice president of communications for the Care Solutions businesses.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage relationships and effectively interact with a range of stakeholders, including senior executives, to create and execute communications plans and campaigns for ongoing business support as well as critical issues 
  • Engage and partner with the people team, external communications, UnitedHealth Group communications, legal and others to understand upcoming activity 
  • In partnership with the vice president of communications, create comprehensive communications plans that include enterprise-wide narratives and projects 
  • Lead, plan and execute all aspects of regular all-employee townhall meetings, including partnering with business leaders to develop the agenda, write leader messaging, develop presentations, create videos, and oversee all logistical details 
  • Create compelling and engaging communications vehicles, including memos, video messages, and blogs, from senior executives to engage employees 
  • Advance the Optum Health culture through regular-cadenced messaging and storytelling 
  • Ensure message consistency across all communications channels 
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to create effective messaging for audiences 
  • Partner with the vice president of communications on enterprise-wide narratives and projects 
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders as needed and support internal peers’ relationships with their respective stakeholders 
  • Embody and promote UHG corporate values and ethics and demonstrate exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of communications experience within a matrixed organization 
  • 7+ years of experience with the full suite of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint 
  • 5+ years of project management experience 
  • 5+ years of professional writing and editing experience 
  • Demonstrated experience and skill leading a high-performing communications team 
  • Extensive writing and editing experience with an eye for quality and clarity. 
  • Ability to flex and write/edit effectively for different audiences, applying appropriate tone, detail and message elevation for each unique situation 
  • Integrated communications experience 
  • Experience leading and executing all-employee townhall meetings, including developing content, agendas, presentation materials, and prepping senior leaders 
  • Demonstrated experience working and consulting with senior executives 
  • Proven ability to prioritize and operate effectively in a highly matrixed, complex business and communications environment, including simultaneously supporting multiple stakeholders and effectively advancing multiple communication priorities 
  • Proven ability and willingness to collaborate with communications leaders across multiple businesses, in the interest of telling a more integrated, holistic story and protecting and elevating the reputation of the broader enterprise

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Combination of corporate and agency communications experience 
  • Experience creating videos for visual storytelling 
  • Experience in healthcare

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
