Visit Milwaukee offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students to gain firsthand experience in the destination marketing industry. Internships are offered for the benefit of the student, and will focus on skill development and professional growth.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: A successful internship depends greatly on the effort and work ethic put forth by the intern. Interns will become part of the Visit Milwaukee team, and as such are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Interns will be expected to complete their assignments in order to receive maximum educational and professional benefits from their experience.

VISIT MILWAUKEE RESPONSIBILITIES: The internship supervisor and other assigned staff will serve as mentors during the internship, offer instruction and supervision to the intern, and oversee development of the their professional skill set. The intern may be assigned to work under more than one supervisor.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Orientation of the intern to include introduction to Visit Milwaukee staff, department functions, organization mission and vision, and company policies and procedures. 
  • Development of a program of work, goals, and objectives with the intern, and with an academic institution if required. 
  • Identification of specific job duties and work schedule to meet goals and objectives. 
  • Oversight of work status and performance of the intern. Provide support and feedback on an ongoing basis. 
  • Assist intern with outreach and networking opportunities. 
  • Completion of any required documentation, progress reports, and final intern evaluation, as well as any documentation or reports required by an academic institution. 

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY: The intern will be assigned special projects and duties as determined by the supervisor to support and assist the Visit Milwaukee communications department.

Visit Milwaukee’s communications department is charged with increasing awareness of Milwaukee as a premier destination for meetings, conventions, and leisure travel, through media contact resulting in a variety of trade and consumer editorial placements. The department also supplies content to various publications as well as writing copy to meet in-house needs. Additional departmental responsibilities include assisting in public relations counsel as needed by partners and convention/meeting planners, public relations aid in coordinating in-house and outside special events/projects, and garnering local, regional, and national support of the tourism bureau and its goal through a variety of public relations efforts.

Visit Milwaukee’s communications intern supports the marketing and communications department in several ways.

Requirements

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Partner correspondence to assist with media hosting. 
  • Assemble/send media kits/gift bags as requested. 
  • Assist in the creation of blog posts and content generation for social media outlets. 
  • Assist as required on press trips. 
  • Compile research as needed relating to media lists, miscellaneous travel industry information, publication profiles, circulation, etc. 
  • Update media lists and media kit information as needed. 
  • Data entry of communications department information into Simpleview database.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required education and experience:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited academic institution with an emphasis in marketing, journalism, communications, or a related field. 
  • Junior or senior standing preferred 

Required skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication, customer service skills, and the ability to convey information in a positive manner. 
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. 
  • Proficient research skills. Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, and aptitude to learn new programs/software. 
  • Strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. Ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically, racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit at desk, operate computer keyboard and view computer screen for six to eight hours per day. 
  • Must be able to hear and converse via telephone and in person. 
  • May be required to lift boxes and small equipment up to 50 pounds in weight. 
  • Travel in personal automobile may be required for business.

This is a paid internship of 15.00/hour and is eligible for academic credit as defined by the academic institution.

Work schedules will be determined by the supervisor and the intern, and will be during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
