The Forest Preserves of Winnebago County (FPWC) provides over 11,500 acres of land for the use and enjoyment of the general public. Lush woods, picturesque streams, dramatic cliffs and dells, unspoiled prairies, and native wildlife are treasures to be enjoyed by residents and visitors of all ages. Hiking, camping, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, bird watching, and cross-country skiing are recreational activities available at sites throughout the county. There are 44 individual forest preserves for the purpose of protecting the natural beauty of Winnebago County, as well as for education and recreation.

PURPOSE:

FPWC seeks a passionate, professional, articulate individual to serve as the agency’s Communications Coordinator. The person in this position should be highly organized, a self-starter, and have strong written, verbal, and graphic design skills. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of marketing initiatives relating to the engagement of the public as defined by the executive director. This includes creating content for and maintaining the agency’s website, all social media platforms, and Constant Contact e-communications blasts, as well as coordination of special events. Additionally, this person is responsible for the agency’s photography, videography, graphic design, and creative work for seasonal brochures, flyers, signage, press releases, etc. The work schedule may fluctuate based on agency needs and may include occasional evening and weekend hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marketing & Communications:

  • Creates and coordinates external written and digital FPWC communications for press releases, newsletters, and other media communications. 
  • Responsible for all graphic design creative work pertaining to print and digital media designs. 
  • Responsible for the writing, design, and distribution of FPWC press releases, flyers, posters, banners, email blasts, and in-house promotional and programming flyers. 
  • Implements print production and distribution of FPWC marketing material utilizing industry software such as Adobe Creative Suite Design software and/or Canva. 
  • Cultivates and expands opportunities for event sponsorship and advertising in local TV, radio, and print media outlets. 
  • Develops and enforces graphic standards and consistency of all marketing materials throughout the District. Maintains FPWC logo, marketing instruction, and Brand Standards Manual. 
  • Responsible for developing and managing the overall FPWC marketing budget, including the events and sponsorship budgets. 
  • Responsible for FPWC photography and videography and the editing of images

Website & Social Media:

  • Responsible for managing the FPWC website, social media posts, and status updates to effectively engage the public. 
  • Proposes and implements additional strategies and outlets to continuously evolve the FPWC website and social media platforms with fresh and appealing content. 
  • Accesses the effectiveness of the FPWC website and social media platforms via tracking, analyzing, and presenting meaningful measurements.

Community Relations:

  • Represents FPWC at community partnership meetings and regional events through public presentations, open houses, and special events, creating promotional materials as necessary. 
  • Posts FPWC events and activities on local community calendars, such as the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Rockford Register Star, and other media outlets as applicable. 
  • Coordinates FPWC special event logistics (event contractors and event user groups) in collaboration with key stakeholders. Also responsible for the design of collateral material, such as event flyers, signage, banners, etc., related to each event. 
  • Build relationships with media outlets to place stories about FPWC in the news in conjunction with campaigns and/or special events

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attends monthly Board Meetings to report on special events and/or marketing initiatives 
  • Adheres to all FPWC risk management and safety programs and procedures. 
  • Responsible for all other projects assigned by the executive director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

To perform this job effectively, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken forms. 
  2. Strong administrative and organizational skills emphasizing time management and the ability to simultaneously plan, organize, and implement numerous projects. 
  3. Working knowledge of industry software such as Adobe Creative Suite Graphic Design Software, Photoshop, Illustrator, lnDesign, Acrobat Pro, and/or Canva. 
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, and PowerPoint, along with superior knowledge of working with website content management software and social media platforms. 
  5. Portrays an enthusiastic and respectful attitude toward nature and people. 
  6. Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, and events as the schedule demands. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

An associate degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, Communications, or other relevant fields is required, along with one to three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Portfolio selections of sample print and digital design work are a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Wage Range: $22.00 - $27.50 DOQ.
